Citroen DS3: First Official Images of Production Model

Citroen hopes to climb upmarket with the all-new DS3 that was officially revealed in production form today ahead of its world debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The DS3 is the first model from Citroen's brand new DS line that revives the "Déesse" badge and will eventually comprise of three upscale vehicles including a Golf-sized DS4 compact model and a mid-sized DS5 luxury car.

As projected, the production model has remained remarkably close to the DS concept that was unwrapped at the Geneva Salon earlier this year. In fact, the only notable differences between the prototype and the production car concern the replacement of the concept's central tailpipe with two outlets and the conventional roof antenna.

The DS3's stylishly aggressive exterior is matched with an equally tasty interior which is shared with the new 2010 C3 hatch. Being a more upscale model, the DS3 features a more trendy trim decor than its five-door sibling.

Just like the MINI which is considered one of the closest rivals to the DS3, Citroen will offer buyers the ability to customize the exterior and interior of their cars. In addition to a wide range of body shades, the DS3's roof is available in a choice of four colors (Black, White, Blue and Red), while the wing mirrors and rubbing strips can be personalized in colors or chrome finish. Furthermore, the wheels and wheel centers are available in a wide spectrum of shades.

Inside, buyers have a choice of six finishes for the dashboard strip which encompasses the air vents, instrument cluster, multi-function screens and the scented air-fresher while there's also a variety of colored fabrics and leather and even five different trims for the gear knob.

The DS3, which will be offered exclusively as a three-door hatch, shares its underpinning with the new C3. It measures 3.95m in length, 1.71m in width and 1.46m in height.

At launch, Citroen's premium hatch will be available with a choice of five CO2-efficient Euro V power plants consisting of two HDi diesel units delivering 90 HP and 110 HP, and three BMW co-developed 1.6-liter petrol engines producing 95HP, 120HP and 150HP (Turbo) which are all fitted with either 5 or 6 speed manual gearboxes.

The new DS3 will go on sale in most European markets by early 2010.
