The range of S-Class engines gets off to a particularly powerful start with the S 350. The 6-cylinder V-engine, featuring four valves per cylinder and continuously variable camshaft adjustment, is among the most powerful in its class. With its 200 kW (272 hp) it demonstrates great accelerating power for quick spurts.
This impressive power does not, however, come at the cost of high consumption figures. Thanks to optimisation of the combustion processes and a consistently lightweight design, consumption averages 10.1–10.3 litres per 100 km (combined).
(S 350: fuel consumption combined: 10.1–10.3 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 242–247 g/km)[1]

7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission
The S-Class is fitted as standard with the 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission developed by Mercedes-Benz (not available for the S 600 or S 65 AMG). The seven gears make for smaller shifts in engine speed – which means that you’ll hardly notice the gear changes. Having seven gears also reduces the average engine speed, saving up to 0.7 litres of fuel per 100 km. 7G-TRONIC is operated using the selector lever of the DIRECT SELECT transmission, which is located next to the steering wheel.
With the set-up switch you can choose between three modes: Comfort, Sport and Manual. In Manual mode you shift gears using the DIRECT SELECT buttons on the steering wheel. In Comfort mode the gears are shifted earlier and the suspension has a more comfortable setting. Sport mode permits a more dynamic suspension setting and lets you take each gear up to maximum revs.

In the S-Class, the improved AIRMATIC (electronically controlled damping system) and the optionally available Active Body Control (ABC) ensure optimum ride comfort. These two technologies not only enable relaxed cruising in the S-Class, but a dynamic driving style as well.
Whereas AIRMATIC makes for still more comfort and agility at speed, in the ABC system high-pressure hydraulics, sophisticated sensors and powerful microprocessors interact to permit the S-Class to adapt to the condition of the road within fractions of a second.
ABC significantly reduces body motion when moving off or braking and pitch and roll when cornering.
