The R-Class surprises you with its great technical finesse and an agility which makes every drive a pleasure. You can choose between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive: get the V6 petrol engine R 350 with rear-wheel drive or the top model R 500 with V8 petrol engine always with the permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive. This provides improved or optimised traction. It brakes wheels with insufficient tyre grip in a targeted manner and at the same time also increases the drive torque on the wheels with good traction.
Whichever engine you select, you always receive a suspension that is made equally for both curving stretches of road and motorways. You can take it up another notch with the optional AIRMATIC package, an all-round air suspension with adaptive damping system ADS. All these features make for relaxed, superior driving experience.
- Petrol Engines
The R 350 show how you can cause quite a stir with understatement. Its V6 engine with four valves per cylinder and continuously variable camshaft adjustment provide spontaneous power delivery. 200 kW (272 hp) for the R 350 demonstrate great pulling power for quick bursts of speed. The petrol engine also allows for relaxed cruising in the upper gears – and the consumption figures are impressively low. Effortless superiority in any driving situation is the defining characteristic of the new 8-cylinder engine in the R 500 4MATIC. The figures tell their own story: 285 kW (388 hp) and a maximum torque of 530 Nm. The R 500 4MATIC accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds. Variable intake and exhaust camshafts, as well as extensive use of lightweight materials such as magnesium, ensure excellent fuel economy for this vehicle class. And just to make sure that all this power is delivered as comfortably as possible, the standard 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission does the gearshifting for you. -Transmisisons 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC is the cutting edge of transmission technology and makes for a particularly comfortable drive. Seven forward gears mean smaller shifts in engine speed over a wide ratio spread, so you will hardly notice the gearshifts. When shifting down through the gears, 7G-TRONIC’s multiple downshift principle allows it to skip several gears, resulting in faster gear changes. A torque converter lockup clutch which is active from first gear and the transmission control also make for less fuel consumption and optimum acceleration. -Suspension The optional 4MATIC[1] permanent all-wheel drive, advanced axle design, a long wheelbase and many dynamic handling control functions deliver a ride that is comfortable in the extreme. -All-Wheel drive The optional 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system provides valuable support when you need help handling the road surface. The permanent all-wheel system distributes the drive torque to front and rear axles at a ratio of 50:50. In conjunction with the Electronic Traction System (ETS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), 4MATIC improves tyre grip and traction – particularly on unstable roads, wet surfaces, snow and ice.R 350

Thanks to the standard-specification direct-shift transmission DIRECT SELECT, the centre console of the R-Class is free for other uses. The positions of the automatic transmission are set simply using the selector lever behind the steering wheel. You can choose between P, R, N and D without taking your hands off the wheel. Two shift modes are available: "S" for Sport and "C" for Comfort. The current mode is displayed in the instrument cluster. If you want to change gears manually, simply push the steering-wheel gearshift buttons, provided as standard.
Front wheel location is by a double-wishbone axle for improved ride comfort and handling dynamics, while the rear wheels are located by a sophisticated four-link axle. The 5-seater and 4+2-seater feature an all-steel suspension, while the 5+2-seater and R 500 4MATIC have a rear air suspension with level control as standard. On request all models are available with the AIRMATIC package, which has all-round air suspension for even greater ride comfort. The system, in conjunction with the adaptive damping system ADS, ensures improved suspension even with a loaded vehicle. From a speed of 120 km/h the body automatically lowers, which reduces wind resistance and in turn fuel consumption. You can also raise the body by up to 50 mm with the touch of a button, for example, in order to better negotiate poor road surfaces. The optional all-wheel system 4MATIC also helps you in this regard.4MATIC all-wheel drive
